Microneedling Q & A

Rochester Laser Center

What is microneedling?

During a microneedling session, the technician uses a device with super-fine needles to create tiny punctures in the top layer of your skin. This triggers a wound response in your body, so you create new collagen and elastin: two compounds that contribute to firm, healthy-looking skin.

The new collagen and elastin thickens your skin and minimizes the appearance of lines while improving skin tone and diminishing pigmentation.

Microneedling is appropriate for a variety of skin tones and makes it easier for products, including moisturizers and anti-aging creams, to be absorbed deeply into your skin.

What is a PRP facial add-on?

While microneedling can be effective on its own, add on a PRP facial for even more dramatic results. PRP stands for platelet rich plasma, which is created by spinning down a small sample of your blood in the state-of-the-art Arthrex Angel® system.

This process customizes PRP that’s just right for you: With more growth factors and other healing proteins to enhance skin rejuvenation. The customized PRP is applied directly to the channels created during the microneedling process for optimal absorption of the compounds that promote skin healing.

Does microneedling hurt?

Most patients tolerate microneedling well. It’s not a procedure that you’d choose for relaxation, but applying a topical numbing cream beforehand eases discomfort. Following treatment, your skin will feel slightly sunburned and have a pinkish hue. It takes 24-72 hours for your skin to recover completely.

After treatment, you’ll be advised to use sunblock and stay out of the direct sun for two weeks. You should also avoid aggressive exfoliation for at least one week after treatment.

How long before I see results from microneedling?

While you begin seeing results on the day after treatment, remember that collagen and elastin production takes time.

You’ll notice optimal results four to eight weeks following treatment. You benefit most from a series of microneedling sessions, spaced 30 days apart.
