Botox Q & A

What is Botox?

Botox® Cosmetic is a simple, non-surgical treatment that can temporarily smooth moderate to severe facial wrinkles. Botox injections take about 10 minutes and consist of a few small injections. Within days this procedure creates a noticeable improvement in moderate to severe frown lines between the brows.

Botox is not permanent and its administration is ideally repeated 3 to 4 times throughout the year to achieve the best outcome.

How does Botox work?

Botox addresses wrinkles that occur due to the fine movements of your face. Whenever you frown, smile or concentrate, the muscles between your eyebrows contract and the skin around your eyes form creases. Years of this repetitive movement results in lines that etch into your skin.

Botox contains a neurotoxin that works beneath your skin’s surface to halt the action of these muscles, reducing the appearance of lines and wrinkles. Botox is most effective on forehead lines and crow’s feet.

When will I see results from getting Botox?

You may see results as early as within 24 to 48 hours of injection. Results typically become visible in 7 to 10 days after injection, with the maximum effect visible at 30 days.

Common uses for Botox

  • Wrinkles in Facial Skin
  • Gum-Revealing Smile
  • Excessive Sweating
  • Neck Spasms

Other uses for Botox

Diminish the appearance of gums

Botox can be used to lengthen the upper lip and drop it down slightly, in order to reduce the appearance of the gums when smiling. The success of this procedure depends on the original length of the lip and prominence of the gums, and is only ideal for certain patients.

Reduce excessive sweating

Some people experience excessive sweating under their arms, which is also known as hyperhidrosis of the axillae. For the most part, this can be resolved using deodorants, antiperspirant creams, or gels. However, when topical treatments do not resolve this condition, Botox can be injected into the underarm area to reduce the activity of the local sweat glands.

What are hyaluronic acid fillers?

Rochester Laser Center offers hyaluronic acid fillers, including the Juvéderm collection of fillers, which erase fine lines, lift sunken cheeks, and plump the lips.

Hyaluronic acid is a natural compound that your body produces to make your skin look hydrated, full and supple. With age, your production of hyaluronic acid drops, leading to a loss of volume in specific areas, such as your cheeks and lips. Lines and wrinkles become more obvious, too.

With injectable hyaluronic acid fillers, you restore the fullness and hydration of your skin. The results are subtle and long-lasting.

How long do the effects of injectables last?

The wrinkle-reducing effects of Botox last anywhere from three to four months. Juvéderm’s plumping effects can stay six months or longer, depending on the application and your metabolism.

Do the injections hurt?

Botox, Juvéderm, and other fillers do involve needles, so you’ll feel a slight prick with each injection. But the needles are exceptionally fine, so the sensation is minimal.

Are Botox and dermal fillers safe?

Side effects from Botox and fillers are rare. Botox has been studied extensively, while the fillers contain naturally occurring compounds that your body already produces. When applied at a medically-supervised practice by the trained staff at Rochester Laser Center, you can trust the treatment to get you optimal results.
